I re-did the About Aggro Femme page after having stolen this “about me” template thingie from Hunter and filling it out. There are also some links in the links section. I got rid of the friends page and just listed (some of) you people on the About Me thing. So, look at it. And make me happy.

So ABC’s coming out with this American Idol-esque show to air during the summertime, and a boy I grew up with, Jeremiah Richey, is going to be on it. The premiere airs tonight on ABC (check your local listings… I’ve always wanted to say that) and vote for him, even if he’s not the best one.

So a posthumous release from Johnny Cash came out a week ago, American V. I’m reading Cash’s autobiography, plus a book written about his spiritual journey, The Man Comes Around, by Dave Urbanski (reviews to follow not-so-closely). So this cd… depressing. And from what I’ve read, Cash usually liked to keep his music simple, and this is rather embellished for what I gather are his tastes. BUT! I still like it. He sings “If You Could Read My Mind” by Gordon Lightfoot. It’s my favorite. The latter book contains a quote by a Tom Dearmore, taken from an article he wrote for New York Times Magazine entitled “First Angry Man of Country Singers”: “He is singing what’s inside of him, searching in a haunting way for a note that isn’t there.” I LOVE this quote, it describes his voice gorgeously.
Rewind several hours:
I was reading The Man Comes Around at 3am at IHOP. My waiter had dreads and we discussed books, Johnny Cash, road trips, Australia, and the spanish language. It was fun, nice, something you read about. I left him a $10 tip.

So I just finished watching this movie half an hour ago (I’m now watching Dawn of the Dead ‘78). It was pretty funny, though I hate Tea Leoni for stealing Fox Mulder from me. It was kinda like a cross between a Cohen Brothers’ film and Death to Smoochy. If you haven’t seen the latter, you should. As for Cohen Brothers’ films, I don’t recommend any except O Brother Whereart Thou?. …there’s not much I wanted to say beyond that. And I’ll be using the same ratings system as I do with books, reposted here for your convenience.
Let’s say… 3 out of 5 stars.
1 – SUCK!
2 – I guess I should at least finish it…
3 – I kinda liked this one.
4 – Love it!
5 – One of my favorites of all time.

I loved this book. It’s a very short piece of fiction (213 pages) written as a collection of letters from a 15 or so year old boy, to someone he only addresses as “Dear friend.” The boy calls himself “Charlie,” telling the addressee that he won’t be using real names. The reason I liked it so much is that it’s written as a 15 year old boy. The language isn’t flowery, unless “Charlie” tells “Dear Friend” that he wishes to employ some of the vocabulary words he learns in english class. USA Today claims the book to be “in the tradition of ‘The Catcher in the Rye’ and ‘A Separate Peace,’” but the former bored me into annoyance (though I may try to read it again) and the latter was too prep school. It’s set in the early nineties, which I easily identify with, as I was almost the same age as “Charlie” at that time. “Charlie” speaks of his standing out, being weird, his emotionally distant family, his gay friend, his first love, the zine he helps publish, Rocky Horror Picture Show… And to be fair, I liked the book before I learned that it was published by MTV Books. I know right; who knew?
I really can’t do the book justice, and this is my first review, so cut me some slack. Check out Amazon and read the excerpts.
I give it four out of five stars, and my ratings are judged as follows:
1 – SUCK!
2 – I guess I should at least finish it…
3 – I kinda liked this one.
4 – Love it!
5 – One of my favorites of all time.
